.. crestfallen .. the moment of a camera’s ’fail to function .. or cel phone or any device - lost or stolen too ! ideally one rescues the ‘memory card - the data, film or tape etc..a moment of silence too !
That aside - some folks are the proverbial 1/2 of a collision seeking the other 1/2 .. and the term asshole is certainly in play.. caloo callay ! This is also the ‘tantrum territory - a pandora’s walk-in closet from hell yawns open & raggedy ass narcissistic self pity is splattered .. such assholery is not in short supply & it’s embarrassing it was left to you - to bat cleanup after she had already built up to volcanic spewing speed
We were once on the perimeter of a tragic & fatal holiday excursion due to wild dog attack & the badly mauled survivor was a daily visible presence at our resort for almost a week as a result - our hearts went out to her - & our resort stepped up like champs.. instantly - Canadian owned & managed might I add - the incident was on an adjacent island & had no connection whatsoever to our resort in any way - she was simply ‘staged there’ while the entire ‘extraction home’ unfolded ..
Would Anne & I have survived - done better.. possibly or likely.. we’re both students of the local culture & realities - attuned to bad vibe & no dog or dogs gonna take me out in the water.. where i’m more dangerous than a rabid racoon..
We never heard a word of complaint from the surviving victim.. 🦎🏴☠️🇨🇦
It isn't Disney World... that drew me in. I know I'm not qualified to go on certain adventure trips... but when given the opportunity I step outside my comfort zone and revel in how the real world is so much more thrilling... even the overwhelming, scary parts, they make me feel alive.
I'm looking for one (a place, an adventure) I can handle now... they are disappearing quickly, I hope to make it in time! Loved this read, and picking up the books you mentioned in the piece, they sound wonderful! Thank you so much for your work. Your writing is new to me, and I love it!
Thanks Patti. The wild isn't for everyone, and some aspects of some wild are fine for many. There are some trips too wild for me, as well. I do strongly recommend Beaver's outfit. I really hope to go back!
The behavior of that couple makes me cringe -- did they make it their mission to become living, unpleasant stereotypes? How gratifying that you had the chance to follow their trail of revenge and see it come to . . . nothing but whining.
Thanks, Jan. I just find this level of irresponsibility appalling. It's not the only place I've seen it. Americans have no idea how frugal these companies have to be, and if you're going to travel, then you absolutely need to understand your part of the bargain. They knew they were dumb, they couldn't cop to it, and couldn't let go. I have very strong feelings about people like this and have on several occasions written reviews just to beat down this level of stupidity.
The term "ugly American" exist for a reason...it's real thing!
I've been around the world a couple or more times, by now, including being in the middle of a rather fast river (a Peruvian tributary to the Amazon) in a dugout with a Betacam video camear(about 35lbs) on my lap and a battery belt around my waist. When my guide, a local village kid, made sure I understood that I had to sit very still, I listened.
We made it across the river and back with nary drop of water getting to me or my gear. Mostly, listening carefully will save time, money and, ultimately, your life!
And I must have met a cousin of your protagonist on a recently boat trip on Lake Geneva! It took the entire tour group, including our extremely talented tour director, to get her under some kind of control. Wild!
.. haha - to this day - I dare not reveal fully some of the places & settings I’ve been in with fragile film / tape / digital media & pricy Production Gear / Film / Video / Sound (& my ass !!) .. But ! My various Bcam Models & other cams were invariably Rental or Network or Client & ensured to the hilt - for sure I would have rolled Docu footage of her & hubby - showtime ! I still have my old Nikonos P&S & fyi when canoeing any wallet & ID - camera, meter, media or phone is inside 1 gallon plastic pickle jars in colourful mesh bags velcro’d cunningly - come to think about it - velcro - bungie & carabiners are omnipresent
I just did a 5 day/77+ mile thru hike of the Foothills Trail in South Carolina. 4 of the days I had some of the worst storms I've ever been out in! My DSLR was in a Sea to Summit dry sack and I had no issues! Those sacks are fantastic!
Thanks for the underscore, Eric. I have used all types, the Ultra Sil just isn't hardy enough for my purposes and that badass dry bag for kayaking is heavy but impermeable. Great products!
I can picture the scene perfectly; not only because you wrote it well, but because I think we’ve all met that woman in some situation or another. Excellent writing/storytelling. :)

As you should! This is why I never tried to convince my kids that Santa Claus was real.

There is one on every trip, sadly.
Great story and now I would brave both the wet and the entitled tourists to go there!

On the cheap end, I used turkey oven bags for my other gear and these worked well. I'm sure they aren't durable enough for the Amazon, though! 😁
It's the ability to secure them tightly that I liked.
That "lady" (term used loosely) was SO entitled. And reinforcing the ugly American stereotype. Sigh.
On more than one occasion, I've claimed to be from North America just to avoid being labeled.
I'm dual citizen and have the option to use my Canadian passport. 👍
I loved reading this. Absolutely there is a need to prepare, it is all part of the adventure. Such a valuable lesson for them
Ah, it *could* be a valuable lesson, but I doubt they learned a damn thing.
They didn't. From what I could tell, Mary, the caterwauling went on for a good long time.

Thank you, Mary. I've seen her many times over the years....
